How do I administer the medication?

Storage

Please preserve your syringe upon reception:

  • In the refrigerator
  • At room temperature

BD Posiflush XS syringes are kept at room temperature.

If you are having difficulty infusing your medication or have any questions, can reach our pharmacist 24 hours a day by dialing 514-526-7773 Ext #6.

You can also contact the CLSC nurse or call 811.

Before the infusion, follow the steps below

  1. Remove from refrigerator at least 30 minutes or more before administration as advised by your pharmacist. Avoid excessive heat, freezing or direct light.
  2. Make sure the syringe is labeled with your name and that the medication and dosage are correct. Check that the expiration date has not passed.
  3. Wash your hands as instructed by your nurse and then gather all your equipment in a clean work area.

You will need:

How do you irrigate your catheter with a saline solution like the BD Posiflush XS syringes?

To rinse your catheter, refer to your nurse's instructions.

Step 1

Clean the catheter tip with an alcohol swab for 1 minute and then let it dry. Do not blow dry.

Step 2

Unwrap your syringe from its plastic packaging. While holding the syringe pointing up, gently unscrew the cap without uncovering the tip of the syringe.

Step 3

Push the plunger slightly to release
the air bubble. Unscrew the
cap of the salt water syringe. Avoid
touch the tip of the syringe.

Step 4

Screw the syringe to your catheter tip.

Step 5

Clamp the clip on your catheter.
Unscrew the syringe to remove it.

If you need to flush your catheter with heparin after the saline, proceed as above.

If you are having trouble getting your medication, check to see if:

  • The clamp on your catheter is in the open position.

Unclamp your catheter. Slowly inject your medication as recommended by your nurse.

Step 6

Clamp the clip on your catheter. Unscrew the syringe to remove it.
